In an incredible development in Kentucky, a female doctor who was just about to give birth herself helped another woman deliver her child.
Something absolutely amazing just happened at a hospital in Kentucky. An OB-GYN doctor was being induced into labor to deliver her own child when suddenly she heard that another woman needed help deliver her baby, so she threw on a hospital gown and a pair of boots and went to work.
Doctor Amanda Hess is no stranger to delivering children into this world, but certainly not while preparing to deliver her own. But that’s the situation that unfolded at Frankfort Regional Hospital in Kentucky recently, an amazing story that has quickly gone viral on social media.
“You know I love doing what I do. I love taking care of mothers and babies and you really a lot of doctors are always thinking of their patients even when they’re a patient themselves,” Doctor Hess was quoted in a WKYT report. “I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room and I knew her.”
The woman’s name was Leah Halliday Johnson, and she was fully dilated and screaming when Hess got to her. Hess felt she had to assist because the doctor who was on call had been on break at the time, and was still heading back to the hospital. Hess believed she needed to assist the woman right away, and so she started to help deliver the baby.
Even in the chaos, Hess recognized Johnson as a patient she had seen for a checkup just a few days before. Johnson was relieved to see Hess, as she was ready to deliver her baby. And it was not a moment too soon: just a few minutes after the baby was delivered, Hess started to feel contractions and soon gave birth to her own child, a little girl she named Ellen Joyce.
Johnson said she liked Hess a lot in the times she had seen her before, and was super impressed that she dropped everything, including her own labor, to help her deliver her baby. She didn’t realize that Hess was in labor herself, and admired her professionalism.
“I had actually taken a call the day before, so I thought really that I was working up to the last minute. But this was literally ’til the last second,” Hess reportedly said.
Johnson and Hess haven’t met since the amazing scene unfolded. Johnson said she was grateful, and Hess said she was just doing her job.
“Delivering other peoples’ babies is something I do every day. And I’m more comfortable with delivering someone else’s baby than my own, for sure,” she said.
