
An outbreak of a terrifying disease in East Harlem has authorities working hard to get a handle on the problem and prevent further spread.
A New York Police officer in East Harlem has been hospitalized and authorities have since discovered the presence of a dangerous disease in the area. Legionnaires’ has been discovered at the 23rd Precinct in Harlem after an officer came down with symptoms that are a hallmark of the disease.
The health department issued a statement stating that the preliminary results from an investigation by an independent contractor found traces of bacteria associated with Legionnaire’s disease, although the results are being further reviewed. Authorities have shut down the cooling toward that supports the building’s HVAC systems for the time being. The hot water supply has also been shut down.
Legionnaire’s is not contagious and easily treatable, but it can be dangerous with flu-like symptoms like fever, cough, or difficulty breathing that can become life threatening. It is spread when people breath in water vapor containing the bacteria.
