Sony has a new VR project in the works, and it’s not what you think

Sony has a new VR project in the works, and it’s not what you think

A recent patent application reveals that Sony has some interesting virtual reality projects in the works.

Virtual reality is all the rage these days, and some of the biggest tech companies are vying for their own slice of the market. According to a Slash Gear report, however, one company is blazing straight past the coveted headset and trying out something a little different.

A recent patent application reveals that Sony is working on a mysterious virtual reality “glove interface object” that will presumably be integrated into upcoming PlayStation games. The technology could provide hand tracking, eliminating the controller as a staple of video game systems.

The technology builds on PlayStation’s hand-tracking Move controllers, but will likely offer a much higher degree of functionality. The glove will include sensors that will be able to respond to even the slightest flex of a finger. Contact sensors will be able to tell when two fingers are pressed together, and additional sensors will be able to map out the hand’s position on the screen.

The patent application explains that the motivation behind the development is to “simply provide a way of touching, holding, playing, interfacing or contacting virtual objects shown on a display screen or objects associated with documents, text, images, and the like.”

The patent application was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office on Thursday, but it was originally filed in October of 2014. The company appears to have been working on the VR glove for quite some time, and it may be close to being finished.

The patent also mentions that the glove could sync with a “head-mounted display,” suggesting that Sony also has its own version of a VR headset in the works. The patent offers an interesting look into Sony’s ongoing virtual reality projects, but nobody will know for sure what the final product will look like, or if there will be a final product at all.

The patent application describing Sony’s virtual reality projects can be found here.
