Dosing cup errors force nationwide recall of children’s cough syrup

Company issues voluntary recall due to incorrect markings on dosing cups sold with their product.

Incorrect markings on the dosing cups supplied with a children’s cough syrup have resulted in the recall of the product sold in drug and grocery stores, including CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger and SunMark, according to an article on usnews.com.

Perrigo Company, the manufacturer of several store-brand cough syrups, issued the recall on two batches of grape-flavored medicines, and three batches of its cherry-flavored brands.  The recalled products are distributed and sold nationwide, and the recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration.  Perrigo calls itself “the world’s largest manufacturer of OTC healthcare products and supplier of infant formulas for the store brand market.”

In a press release, the company said an overdose of the cough syrup could cause hyper excitability, rapid eye movements, changes in muscle reflexes, ataxia, dystonia, hallucinations, stupor and coma.  Additionally, small children who are poor metabolizers of dextromethorphan and use the product regularly over a period of several days at the mistaken dose, may develop cumulative toxicity, according to the release.

The company’s Chairman and CEO, Joseph C. Papa, said they were making the recall “because it was the right thing to do,” and added there have been no reports of adverse events to the company as a result of the incorrect markings.  Perrigo has asked distributors and retailers to stop the distribution of the products and to return the products to the company.

The company’s release also said consumers that have product with the corresponding labels and batch numbers should discard the dosing device and discontinue using the product, and Perrigo is arranging for the return of the product.  They also advise any consumer or their children that may have experienced any problem that could possibly be related to the products to contact their physician.

The products are designed to loosen phlegm and making coughs more productive, and the company recommends using them to relieve coughs due to minor throat irritations.

A list of the involved brands and lot numbers can be found on the company’s website here.
