An incredible new study claims that dieting may actually be counterproductive, and regular eating might be the secret.

The key to losing weight may be as simple as eating more, claims a rather counterintuitive study published in the journal Eating Behaviors. The study found that dieting may actually have the opposite effect of packing on pounds, while adopting a regular, healthy eating regimen may be the key to long-term weight loss.

It’s a groundbreaking new study that could change how we think about weight loss and healthy living in general. The study examined 5,000 men and women, who filled out survey son their weight, what kind of weight change they saw over a certain period, what their eating habits were, and other factors.

Researchers were surprised to find that dieters had less success than those who ate regularly, as long as they exercised generally good eating habits. So rather than going on crash diets, people may be better served by just being more selective about what their eating if they want to successfully drop those stubborn pounds.

“Often, people try to prevent and manage excess weight and obesity by dieting and skipping meals. In the long term, such approaches seem to actually accelerate getting fatter, rather than prevent it,” says Ulla Kärkkäinen, a researcher and licensed nutritional therapist at the University of Helsinki.
