President Donald Trump certainly made good on his promise to shake things up in the U.S. government, but one proposal he recently made in his fiscal 2018 budget is causing a lot of anger and consternation. Trump wants to slash the National Institutes of Health by $5.8 billion down to $25.9 billion, and health groups are decrying the move.

Specifically, health groups say this move may block research into the next cure, and who knows what the could be: Zika, Alzheimer’s, superbugs — all are getting intensive research that may need to be reduced because of this cut, they argue.

“It is possible that the next cure for some cancer is sitting there waiting to be discovered, and it won’t get to the table,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, in an Associated Press report.

“All of us woke up this morning in a state of shock about this number,” said Dr. Blase Polite, a cancer specialist at the University of Chicago who chairs the American Society for Clinical Oncology’s government relations committee, in the AP report.
