
The woman is accused bilking the government out of millions of dollars.
A federal jury has convicted the owner of a home health service agency in Tampa of ripping off Medicare. Pilar Garcia Lorenzo, owner of Gold Care Home Health Services Inc., submitted millions of dollars in fraudulent claims to Medicare back in 2014 for home health services her company never provided, and were never prescribed in the first place, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Medicare reimbursed about $2.5 million to his business, and about $2 million of the proceeds were laundered via cash transactions through shell companies. A jury convicted her on Oct. 6, and she will face sentencing on Jan. 5.
The Medicare Fraud Strike Force was the organization that brought the case forward. The strike force has charged more than 2,900 defendants, who are accused of billing more than $10 billion to Medicare.
