Starbucks pulls breakfast sandwiches due to Listeria contamination

Starbucks pulls breakfast sandwiches due to Listeria contamination

Certain breakfast sandwiches purchased on March 3-4 recalled.

Starbucks Coffee Co. has pulled certain type of breakfast sandwiches from its morning offerings due to a possible listeria contamination, according to foodsafetynews.com.

A recall notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the sandwiches may have been available to heat and consume at the Starbucks location, or may have been sold to consumers to take with them for consumption later.

The sandwiches, manufactured by Progressive Gourmet, Inc., of Wilmington, Massachusetts, were the 6-ounce sausage, egg and cheddar cheese English Muffin, and can be identified by the “best before” date of August 7, 2016, on the clear plastic wrapping.  Progressive’s in-house quality control found the Listeria monocytogenes on a food contact surface at its production facility.

The company distributed the sandwiches to warehouses in Maryland, North Carolina, Texas and Louisiana, but the food was only made available in 250 Starbucks locations in the states of Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma on the dates of March 3rd and 4th.

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes can sometimes take up to 70 days to develop, and as of March 4, there had been no illnesses associated with consumption of the sandwiches reported.  Listeria monocytogenes typically cause short-term symptoms in otherwise healthy people, such as high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, but the contamination can be deadly for young children, frail or elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Listeria has been known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

The recall notice from the FDA says Progressive is working with the agency and the Massachusetts Department of Health, and is continuing to investigate the source of the contamination, and taking steps to avoid future problems.

Consumers who purchased the sandwiches are being asked to return the product to the store for a full refund.  Consumers may contact the company at 1-800-224-7630 between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM EST, Monday through Friday, if they have questions or concerns about the products or what they should do to get the refund.
