Formerly conjoined twin finally leaves the hospital

Formerly conjoined twin finally leaves the hospital

It has been almost a year since this conjoined twin was kept in the hospital for treatment, and he's finally going home.

A Florida family is thrilled to welcome their young son home after he spent more than a year in the hospital. According to a report from ABC News, Conner Mirabal is finally coming home after he was separated from his conjoined twin, Carter.

The two boys were conjoined along a stretch that covered the abdomen, and shared a section of their small intestines and livers. The two newborns underwent numerous surgeries, including a 12-hour separation surgery last May. The twins were born in December, 2014.

Conner is spending his first full day at home with his parents, and his family couldn’t be happier. Conner’s father, Bryan Mirabal, told reporters at a news conference this Wednesday that he was extremely excited to spend time with his son outside of the hospital. “It’s teaching time,” Mirabal said. “That’s the fun part, getting to be a dad.”

While Conner is coming home, his brother, Carter, remains in the hospital. Wednesday was the first day in the boy’s life he spent away from the watchful eye of hospital doctors.

Over the course of his short life so far, Conner has seen over 200 medical professionals who sought to ensure that the separation surgery was a success and had minimal complications. Wednesday marked the first day in the twins’ 13-month old lives that they were separated. According to Michelle Brantley, the boys’ mother, the twins were allowed to play together before Conner was taken home.

“He started crying, but Conner was smiling at him and they were grabbing each other’s hands,” said Brantley. “I don’t think they quite understand that they’re brothers yet, but they’ll get there.”

“It’s going to be difficult for us to give him up but he’s going to where he needs to be with his mother and father,” said Dr. Daniel Robie, a surgeon at Nemours children’s Specialty Care and pediatric surgeon at the Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

As Conner waved goodbye to the doctors that helped him make it this far following his separation surgery, the family looked forward to the day Carter can finally join them as well.

The story of Conner and Carter’s long ordeal can be found here.
