Garissa University College in Nairobi was attacked by masked Al-Shabab gunman around 5:30 A.M. According to the Washington Post at least 147 are believed to be dead.
The militants stormed the dormitories strapped with explosive and heavy arms. The militants took some students hostage while shooting others. Kenyon’s National Disaster Operation Center has reported at least 79 injuries in addition to those murdered.
A government spokesperson said the siege lasted 15 hours and included the deaths of four of the militants. More than 500 students were saved when the siege was over.
Government spokesperson Abdulkadir Sugow Said“The fire exchange has now stopped. The next step is to reconcile and to analyze the way forward.”
The militants were fortified in a compound with an unknown amount hostages. They exploded “like bombs,” according to Kenya’s interior minister Joseph Nkaissery when they were struck by the police bullets.
Fear and panic flowed through the city of Garissa as many students were unaccounted for. A large number of students escaped the violence by jumping over a fence to safety.
Rosalind Mugambi escaped the dormitory as bullets whizzed past her. Some of her friends when not so lucky. “We saw some bloodstains, and they were shot,” she said.
According to Ogutu Vquee the militants murdered indiscriminately. Muslims and Christians were killed alike, although there were reports that the groups were separated. “When they attacked us, most of us were asleep, so we were woken by the gunshots. I am totally in fear and confusion.” He said.
