WonderWoman: Leslie Sbrocco

Leslie Sbrocco

Leslie Sbrocco is enjoying life. As a woman of many trades, including wine expert, writer, mother, and television host of the PBS series "Check, Please! Bay Area," she manages to find balance and happiness.

Growing up in Chicago, Sbrocco took after her father, an airline pilot, who loved wine. Throughout her childhood she was exposed to wine, but never planned on making a career out of it.

After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in political science, she moved to the Bay Area where she further developed her love of wine, and ultimately made it her passion.

Through working in the wine industry, Sbrocco has been given the opportunity to do on a regular basis what many are only fortunate enough to do on holiday. Whether it's traveling internationally, eating at world-renowned restaurants, or drinking the best wines, Sbrocco's work is, not surprisingly, something she genuinely loves.

As a consultant, Sbrocco is often given the opportunity to teach others about wine. According to the expert, the most common misconception about wine is that it has to be expensive and fancy, when in reality it is all about enjoyment, and there is a wine out there for everyone.

Sbrocco is at a place where she can balance her work and family life. Because she owns her own business and sets her own schedule, she's able to spend quality time with her husband and children, Grace, 13 and Dominic, 5.

The excitement Sbrocco has for the present continues through her plans for the future. She currently has another PBS show in the works, plans on adding more consulting to her plate, and ideas for a third book, which she will begin next year.

"Check, Please! Bay Area" can be seen on KQED on Thursdays at 7:30pm and Fridays and Saturdays at 1pm.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Balance. I'm driven, and because wine is an information intensive subject, you need to study, travel, and taste endlessly. This is a great job, but one that can become all consuming. So, trying to be an expert at something that includes a great deal of travel is all about balancing that with my family life.

What's the most important thing you learned in school — or in the "school of hard knocks?"
