Silicon Valley Launches Women's Center in San Jose Published: January, 2007
Raania Mohsen presents the commendation from Senator Elaine Alquist to Lata Patil and Joan Goddard on behalf of the Cardea Center for Women San Jose — The Cardea Center for Women will become a new destination for women in Silicon Valley trying to find the right resources, launch an effective job search, join a basic business-training program, learn how to invest money, or find a mentor.
Named after the Roman goddess of thresholds and doors, Cardea is the 'hinge' who symbolizes the center's goal of encouraging and broadening life/career options for all women and girls regardless of their economic status.
This multi-purpose center is being developed as a community-based hub for women's activities in Silicon Valley, to be used by women from all backgrounds.
It will offer a much-needed physical space for activities of the many women's organizations and community groups linking and creating networks in order to help women succeed personally and professionally
Supported by the Office of Women's Policy, Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss formally introduced the center to the community on December 6 including an audience of women from various nonprofits, service providers and city and county representatives. All offered support and assistance. The center is a partnership between the Women's Action Network (WAN) and the Office of Women's Policy, which is being developed by volunteers and led by Lata Patil, who is the chair of the County's Commission on the Status of Women.
"As of now, there is nothing like this in the area," said Patil. "Initially using meeting spaces in the community, the center will offer extensive women-related resources and programs that identify needs, promote women's strengths as innovators of their own lives, and engage them as agents of change in leadership roles."
