This is no surprise to anyone who knows owner Julie Stevens, known for her contagious enthusiasm for life and people. Stevens says many of the locals stop in for a daily "hello" and leave with smiles on their faces because they feel comfortable in the inviting, interactive space she has created. "Clients can join in on a discussion or share a laugh," says Stevens. " The 17 Jewels team has created an environment with a smooth flow." "Julie's hard work and vision were realized with the opening of her space on Telegraph Ave." says longtime client Peggy Wincorn. "I have followed her when she changed salons and was so pleased to see this talented and artistic young woman open her own space." Stevens, who just opened 17 Jewels nine months ago, knew right away that Temescal was the right neighborhood for her Salon Spa because of the vibe: one that combines change in the air and maintains regard for historical value. Owning her own business has been a lifelong dream for Stevens. After working for the better part of two decades in salons in San Francisco and the East Bay, she developed the idea for 17 Jewels as a place that would have a welcoming environment for clients. In order to do that, Stevens developed a close, kindred team of stylists who would be dedicated to bringing clients current looks and outstanding care. "I know I can come in and sit down and let her do what she wants and it will be great," shares client Nancy Oswald. To Stevens, that kind of trust is a gem. Part of her success is that Stevens has a knack for listening to people and making them feel heard. The other part is her positive outlook on owning a business. "If you do what you love in life the money will follow," she says.
