The girl has contracted severe liver damage after consuming green tea she bought from China to lose weight.
A 16-year-old girl in England has contracted severe liver damage after consuming green tea that she bought online, and began to turn yellow due.
She developed hepatitis after an ingredient in the tea caused liver damage, resulting in jaundice and causing her to also feel dizzy and sick, and experiencing pain in her joints, according to a Daily Mail report.
It all start when she ordered some herbal green tea from China to lose weight. All of its ingredients were in Chinese, so she didn’t know exactly what was in it. Doctors have since zeroed in on an ingredient that they believed caused the condition.
Initially, it wasn’t clear that the hepatitis came from the tea. The girl went to the doctor when she began to turn yellow and reported stomach pain and achy joints, but the doctor believed she had a urinary tract infection and gave her antibiotics. But after two does, the symptoms only got worse, so she went to a hospital located in Birmingham. It was there that doctors realized her liver had swollen and she had hepatitis.
Then began the process of figuring out how she got it. Hepatitis can have a number of causes, and essentially relates to damage to the liver. It can be due to a virus, or from excessive alcohol consumption, for example.
But she reported that she hadn’t traveled abroad and contracted any unique virus, or gotten any blood transfusion. And she wasn’t a drinker nor did she take drugs. Finally, she admitted to doctors she had ordered a green tea online from China, and so doctors scrutinized the ingredients. The found out it had an extra ingredient, leaves from a shrub called Camellia senensis, and they believe this may have been the cause for her condition.
